Patio Doors: Timber Sliding Doors

February 21, 2019

Including sliding doors in your home can be a smart move because of their many design and functional advantages-from generous space saving benefits to providing ease of access between rooms, between indoors and outdoors. With a rich history that stretches all the way back to the Roman Empire, sliding doors have since developed into an affordable and robust option for all.

Sliding patio doors are usually 2 or 3 panels which slide and overlap with one panel always remaining in place.

Sliding patio doors do not open in or out, they slide sideways on tracks in the door frame and therefore don’t take up any space in the home or garden when opened. The design means they can’t be moved or slammed shut by the wind which can be an issue with French doors. They have the flexibility of being able to be slid open as much as needed, either just slightly for ventilation or opened fully.

Sliding doors also offer the most uninterrupted view of the outdoors with large panes of glass in each section.

A timber sliding door opens by sliding along tracks that are fitted into the frames. This type of doors can be hung from the top or the bottom depending on size and weight.

Sliding doors are a hugely popular choice in contemporary homes at the moment. They provide lots of light thanks to narrow, and in some cases practically invisible, frames.

Big benefit of sliding doors – there is no sections to fold back, saving on space and being visually clean. Sliding door can even be designed as pocket door*.

*Pocket Doors: these are the doors that can be hidden away in the cavity of an adjacent wall. They tend to get used where space is at a premium and where a hinged door would be inconvenient. In order to work, you need to plan ahead and to build an encasing wall wide enough to take the door.

Sliding doors move along metal, wood, or vinyl tracks fitted into their frames at the top and bottom. To ease their movement, sliding doors often have plastic rollers attached to the top and bottom or to the bottom only.
